Australian Citizenship Test Format: Questions, Time and Pass Mark

If you are aged 18 to 59 when Home Affairs receives your application, you generally sit the citizenship test. It checks your knowledge of Australia based on Our Common Bond and, at the same time, your basic English.

What the questions cover

All test questions are based on the first four parts of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond: Australia and its people, Australia's democratic beliefs, rights and liberties, government and the law in Australia, and Australian values. Part 5, Australia today, is not tested.

The values rule

Since 15 November 2020 every applicant must answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly, with a mark of at least 75% overall. A high score does not help if even one values question is wrong. Read more in our article on the values questions.

How the test is taken

You do not book the test yourself. Home Affairs sends you a letter with the date, time and place of your appointment, usually at a departmental office in a capital city or at a Services Australia office. You take the test on a computer or tablet and see your result on the screen straight afterwards.

If you do not pass

Not passing does not affect your visa. Home Affairs books another appointment at no extra cost. If you do not pass after three appointments, your application may be refused. See what happens if you fail.
