Eligibility Requirements for Australian Citizenship

Most people become Australian citizens by conferral under the general eligibility rules. Here is what Home Affairs requires, in plain language.

Your visa status

You must be a permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category (subclass 444) visa, when you apply and when Home Affairs decides your application. In most cases you must also be in Australia at the time of the decision.

Good character

Home Affairs assesses your character, looking for example at criminal convictions, reported domestic violence and whether you have been honest in your dealings with the authorities.

Knowledge of Australia and English

If you are aged 18 to 59 when you apply, you generally show both by passing the citizenship test: at least 75% and all 5 values questions correct.

Intention to live in Australia

You must intend to live in Australia, or keep a close and continuing link with Australia while overseas.

Children and people aged 60 or over

Children under 16 do not need to meet the residence requirement but must be permanent residents, and can be included on a parent's application. People aged 60 or over must also meet the residence requirement, but they do not sit the test and apply with Form 1290.
